The Northern Frontier District (NFD) is an area in the northern part of Kenya. It is home to the Somalis, the country's largest ethnic group, who live in the region. It is the second-largest district in Kenya, after the Central Province.

The NFD was established in the year 1925, under the British colonial administration. At the time, it was part of the larger Jubaland region of present-day southern Somalia. The NFD was established in the same year as a way of keeping the peace between the two most powerful groups in the region, the British and the Somalis.

In the years that followed, the NFD was administered by the British. It was then renamed the North Eastern Province in 1957 by the Kenyan government.

The province is a land area of 127,35.5 km2, with its capital at the city of Garissa. It is and has historically been exclusively inhabited by ethnic Somalis.[7][8] The majority of the people in the province are Muslim.

The province is and has historically been an area of great importance to the Somalis, who have lived in the region for more than 300 years. It is the second-largest province in Kenya, after the Central Province.
