Ney is an ancient Middle Eastern wind instrument, which is played by blowing into its mouth. It is a single-row, finger-jazz violin with six finger-holes and a thumb-hole on the back. It is similar to the oboe, but with a higher pitch. The holes are arranged in a figure eight, with the thumb-hole at the center. This gives the player the option of playing with the left or right hand. The holes are not aligned in a straight line, but rather in an arc, so that the player can move the finger from side to side to get a better grasp on the air.

It is an important instrument in a variety of musical genres. In some of these genres, it is the only wind instrument used. In others, it is used in combination with other instruments, such as the Turkish tanbur lute and the Turkish kemençe fiddle.
