Engaging Simulation of Reality Show Dynamics
An early-2000s internet life simulator
mobOS, developed by mob, is an internet exploration and life simulator set in a fictional early-2000s alternate reality. Players enter an evolving online world that changes over real-life time depending on how they interact with it, with the freedom to decide where to go, what to investigate, and which activities they want to pursue.
Players can search for secrets, download games and software, join online communities, make online friends, and spend time on whichever activities interest them most. They play as themselves instead of controlling a fictional hero, and there is no requirement to follow a fixed path or take part in activities they do not want to pursue.
The setting extends beyond the operating system into a fictional universe with its own history, entertainment, and technology. Players can discover fictional video games, television shows, game consoles, historical details, and other pieces of culture that distinguish this alternate reality from the real world and give its online spaces a larger context.
All software in mobOS is written inside the game and compiled into bytecode that its Virtual Machine can read and interpret. Programming is optional, and mobOS is not a programming game. Players who want to create their own content can make software directly in the game and share it through Steam Workshop.
mobOS offers a fictional take on the early-2000s web where players can spend their time according to their own interests. Its open-ended structure leaves room for exploration, discovery, community interaction, and content creation, giving players several ways to engage with the online world without requiring them to follow a fixed path.
