MGE XE is a free mod for the popular Morrowind RPG, the third game released for The Elder Scrolls fantasy game series. The mod brings several graphical improvements into the game, including longer viewing distances. Since this is an aging game, the enhancements do not require an overly powerful computer to render the graphical upgrades.

Morrowind was released roughly twenty years ago, and with the subsequent releases of additional games for the series, such as Skyrim, the developers no longer release new updates. However, it remains quite popular, so MGE XE aims to give Morrowind a more modern feel by improving the graphics.

Graphical enhancements

The most obvious change that MGE XE makes is its expansion of the viewing distance in Morrowind, which opens up much more of the world for players to experience. It also adds better lighting, improved skies, and clearer sunsets.

Distant worlds

As the original game was developed with a maximum viewing distance, the makers of this mod include a tool to generate distant lands with less detail. Thus, it allows you to view worlds from a far distance without using tons of system resources. The generator also incorporates other mods.

Other visual effects

Other visual upgrades that MGE XE incorporates include more realistic water, such as ripples caused by player movements or rain disturbance. The mod also introduces solar shadows that move with the time of day.

Freshen up an older game

Though MGE XE does not offer any new gameplay elements to Morrowind, the visual overhaul itself is sufficient and effective. It won't make the game more appealing to those who weren't interested in the first place, but it's a good reason to replay Morrowind for fans of the original game.
