Massive resource management sim
Masterplan Tycoon is a premium simulation game from solo developer Bureau Bravin. This building game puts heavy emphasis on resource management and logistics. What it lacks in standard gameplay elements, it makes up for it with its multilayered gameplay with virtually countless possibilities. You are tasked with developing a master plan that will connect various cities, allowing products to reach their markets and more.
Masterplan Tycoon offers a minimalist visual presentation and a gentle learning curve with minimal penalties for mistakes. It is a relaxing game that serves as a good mental exercise, similar to Prison Architect plus Human Resource Machine.
Create the perfect master plan
Masterplan Tycoon revolves around trying to build different establishments and locations so they can mutually benefit from each other. Each location is represented by a node and a folder-looking rectangle that provides relevant information. You connect these nodes through their pin, like wiring together different components. Nodes also come in different colors and sizes, which adds variety to its minimalist-looking pixelated map.
What makes it relaxing, though, is that it gently eases the player into its gameplay. You play this game like a long, growing tutorial. You start with simple tasks, teaching you basic mechanics. Once you’re ready, you can start with a large blank canvas and experiment. The game doesn’t offer a lot of conflict or penalties for wrong decisions. You just learn and explore.
With such a minimalist presentation, it’s no surprise that even potato PCs can run this game. The only challenge is that the lack of conflict makes it ultimately boring. Players have even reported a singular strategy that would allow you to cheese any scenario using storage units. Once you’ve discovered this approach, it basically renders the resource management part of the game useless.
Minimalist game in need of spice
There is a difference between casual and relaxing versus boring and stagnant, and Masterplan Tycoon teeters in the middle. On one side, its use of minimalist visuals makes it playable on the lowest specs available and eliminates unnecessary visual strain, making it a calming experience. On the other hand, the lack of penalties, conflicts, and challenges that are paired with a win-all strategy makes this unplayable in the long run.
Pros
- Good use of minimalist visuals
- Gentle learning curve
- Low system requirements
Cons
- Lacks conflict and challenge
