In Mary Poppins, Mary is a magical nanny, who takes care of six young children, the children of the Banks family. They have just moved from London to the suburbs. Through the use of magic, Mary helps them find and learn more about the world, the people around them, and themselves.

As the children grow, they want to go out more and explore. Unfortunately, because of financial troubles, the children's mother refuses to let them go. Mary helps the children, under the condition that they are good and kind.

The most memorable musical number is "A Spoonful of Sugar," in which Mary sings the children a lullaby about the importance of love. The film ends with the children, now grown up, sailing away on a ship.
