Mainlining has put a unique twist in the traditional role-playing genre. As opposed to occurring within a simulated real-time environment, the entire plot actually takes place on the desktop computer of a spy who is a member of an organization known as M17. It is the responsibility of the player to employ cunning and skill to progress through the levels.

Gameplay and Primary Tools

The main plot associated with Mainlining is that a secret agent needs to bring computer hackers to justice. This will take place through sophisticated virtual surveillance techniques. Each opponent is naturally tougher than the last and a number of so-called 'black hat' tactics will need to be used in order to thwart the intentions of the hackers. One interesting feature is that the outcome of each case is determined by the strategy that the player embraces. So, a good amount of intuition and cunning will be required.

Additional Features

Mainlining requires the player to hunt more than 500 different criminals, so there is indeed a novel challenge around each corner. It also displays traditional 16-bit graphics; reflecting the 'golden days' of gaming during the 1990s. There is a free demonstration version available before the full game will need to be purchased.
