Lucium Total War Mod is a free mod created by The Lucium Total War Mod Team for Medieval II: Total War: Kingdoms, an expansion of the strategy game Medieval II: Total War. This video game utility introduces two large campaigns beginning from 1700 to 1850, with progressing technology and warfare.

Lucium Total War Mod adds two new campaigns that take place in an expanded Europe, covering Swedish-Finland to Persia and also including South America. Players will be campaigning through pivotal conflicts in history — the Spanish Succession Crisis, the Great Northern War, and the revolutions of Simon Bolivar.

New campaigns and mechanics

Medieval II: Total War: Kingdoms itself is a massive expansion of the base game, adding four new campaigns, namely the Americas during the European colonization, the series of wars that took place on the British Isles in the 13th century, the Third and Fourth Crusades, and the Northern Crusades. Lucium Total War Mod expands the base game even more with two large campaigns and a slew of new gameplay mechanics.

This DLC-sized mod is still in active development and is divided into two parts: Lucium Europe and Lucium South America, each corresponding to the two campaigns added. Lucium Europe introduces over 400 custom units, historically accurate and expanded maps, a custom menu, and historical interactive events. Meanwhile, Lucium South America adds a custom South America map, reworked policy system, event chains, historical characters, and over 100 new units.

The mod has a dedicated team behind it, and while it’s significantly more polished than other Medieval II mods, it’s not without issues. Among its biggest issues are bits of historical inaccuracies that can break immersion, especially for players who know history well. In addition, some new mechanics such as Army Modernization feel shallow and need to be enriched. Some issues from the expansion can also persist.

Is it worth playing?

If you loved the base game and its expansion, yes. So far, this mod is the only one that explores conflicts from 1700 to 1850, making it a one-of-a-kind gaming experience. There are some historical inaccuracies and some of the new mechanics need more depth to become enjoyable. Still, it’s a quality mod that provides a lot of new content that fans of the game will surely appreciate.
