Insekten Checker, or the Insect Checker app, is a paid tool for checking the presence of additives or insects in a food product. With its EAN (European Article Number) code scanner, grocery shoppers of all ages and levels of technical know-how can use the app with no fuss at all.  

It works offline, too, so you won’t have any trouble using it at stores with poor internet connection. You can also let the app check if a particular insect or additive is present in an item, and this is done by toggling the sliders in the Insect Checker app’s Settings.

However, note that the app will only show you pending and EU-approved insects. Some examples include migratory insects, house crickets, honey bee larvae, and the like. As it’s a food database, not every product will be available. There’s a workaround here, though—just provide an image of an item’s ingredients list and from there, the app will analyze the ingredient information for you.

Also, any newly created or customized food items need to undergo an editorial review, ensuring credibility. Once the process is complete, the items are added to the database and are now available for download by everyone. Thankfully, the database is frequently updated, so you’re always in the know of any changes. Unfortunately, the app is in German. Unless you’re fluent in the language, you might have difficulty using this program.
