The history of Islam is the story of a religion that was born in the Arabian Peninsula more than 600 years ago. It has been the religion of the majority of the world's population for more than 1,400 years.

Islam is the third-largest religion in the world after Christianity and Judaism, and approximately 14% of the world's population practices Islam as their religion.

Islam began with the Prophet Muhammad, who was born in the Arabian Peninsula in the city of Mecca in the year 570 or 579. The religion was revealed to him by God, whom Muslims regard as the only God and the creator of the universe. The word Islam means "saying I am Muhammad," and according to Islamic tradition, the prophet was also called Muhammad.

The religion's central text is the Quran, a collection of more than 100 chapters that were revealed to the prophet Muhammad by God. In Islam, the Quran is the final authority and the last revelation, and it is the only book that is absolutely and literally the word of God. In Islam, the prophet is the messenger of God, and the Quran is the word of God.

The Quran contains guidance for Muslims to live by, as well as detailed descriptions of various types of behavior and the punishments for violating them. It also contains guidance on the proper conduct for Muslims in their relations with other religions and their treatment of non-Muslim citizens.

The Quran has been interpreted and understood by a variety of different religious leaders and scholars over the centuries. In Islam, there are three major divisions or "books" in the Quran. The first is called al-Kuran, which is the main part of the Quran.
