Developed by Yobob, Harvest Island is a premium pixel-style farming simulator with a gripping, yet unsettling storyline. While it falls under the horror genre, it doesn’t employ popular scare tactics like jumpscares in its narrative. 

Rather, the game’s plot leans more on the spooky and mysterious side to keep you invested in the story and characters as well as evoke feelings of tension and intrigue. However, players should expect to see depictions of animal corpses in Harvest Fest. Due to the game’s art style, they are not exceptionally gory—though understandably—this can throw off squeamish players.

Pay homage to the gods

In Harvest Island, you’ll meet the adventurous Will, the shy younger sister Samantha, and their strict father named Greyson. The game’s premise centers on the player offering items—such as coconuts and animals—to the titular island’s gods, and every offering rewards the individual with blessings or Bless. Bless can be used in various ways, from upgrading the farm to crafting tools to boosting your stamina. 

The weather system makes the farming and resource-collection aspect of the game more realistic. During rainy weather, for example, catching fish or finding wild animals will be a chore since they will go into hiding to protect themselves from the downpour. The day-and-night cycle also adds to the immersion, making the world more dynamic. With forests teeming with fireflies, the game’s night cycle is an enchanting sight to behold.

Moreover, the tide system adds a layer of mystery to island exploration, with some areas rendered accessible or inaccessible due to tidal changes. Unfortunately, the in-game explanations can be vague and confusing, leaving players clueless on what to do. Since this is a story-driven title, it’s going to be heavy on the dialogue—which is not necessarily a drawback unless the player hates reading long dialogues.

Mystery and farming rolled into one game

With its intriguing storyline and dynamic environment systems, Yobob’s Harvest Island is a title that every farming sim and mystery fan should have on their radar. While it doesn’t contain jumpscares, players can come across corpses of animals in the game’s world. For some, this is a bit disturbing. Unfortunately, due to the puzzling in-game explanations, players may find themselves struggling with progressing the game.
