Great Expectations is a novel written by Charles Dickens, the British author. It is his final completed novel, and one of his best-known and most-loved works of fiction. The story takes place in the early 19th century.

Pip is an orphaned boy, who is adopted by the rich spinster, Miss Havisham. The rich spinster pays for him to be bound as an apprentice blacksmith. He is treated kindly by the spinster and her daughter, Estella.

The story begins when Pip is seven years old and is taken to the churchyard, where his family is buried. He finds an escaped convict in the churchyard and brings him back to the house.
