Gorf the Ghost Saves Halloween is a free adventure video game that lets you save the true essence of Halloween with cute monsters. Developed by DashRando, this cute 2D single-player pixelated indie game features a top-down perspective and gameplay reminiscent of old RPGs from the Nintendo Game Boy era. 

Similar to Opossum Country, Gorf the Ghost Saves Halloween is a short game that’s easy to grasp and complete. This is because it follows Game Boy controls—and you can even port this as a ROM of the console that can be played on the actual device. 

It’s the season of spooks

In Gorf the Ghost Saves Halloween, you play as the titular cute floating ghost, Gorf. Today is Halloween and you’re ready to go trick-or-treating. However, everyone in town is scared for some reason. They say there’s an evil skeleton at the graveyard—and it’s really killing the festive mood. You have to explore around and help your friends in order to find a way to save the day.

As it’s designed after the Nintendo Game Boy console, there are only a few controls: buttons A and B, START, SELECT, and the D-pad. Unfortunately, while the tutorial outlines them, it doesn’t translate them into keyboard input. A is the Z key, B is the X key, START is the Enter key, SELECT is the Shift key, and the arrow keys or WASD are for moving. You can’t remap them. 

The gameplay is alright and is actually fairly standard of RPGs with adventure as its theme. Its cute retro pixel art gives it a refreshing outlook despite it being a game about classic Halloween monsters. The gameplay can be hard as the map doesn’t indicate your current location. Aiming against the boss is tricky, too, and you don’t know how much health it has left.

Not bad for a Game Boy ROM game

All in all, Gorf the Ghost Saves Halloween is a nice little pixelated game to try out if you’re in the mood for Halloween. While the tutorial and other aspects of the gameplay can be a hassle to deal with, the game is well-made enough to warrant finishing it all in one go. It helps that it’s pretty short and doesn’t require any advanced player skills to progress.
