Goodboy Galaxy is an adventure game for PC created by indie developers, Rik Nicol and Jeremy Clarke. This space exploration platformer made waves on Kickstarter as the first title to be made for the Game Boy Advance in well over a decade, as well.

Similar to games like Terraria or Spelunky, Goodboy Galaxy combines elements of open-world exploration with platforming mechanics to offer a unique experience to players. Players can think of this version as a preview of what is to come when it officially releases on all supported platforms across PC and consoles.

What is Goodboy Galaxy about?

In Goodboy Galaxy, you play Maxwell, whose homeworld is on the brink of ecological collapse. He sets out to find a solution. Due to a twist of fate, though, he finds himself stranded at the edge of a hostile galaxy. You’ll help him figure a way out of his predicament as he explores various worlds, meets various characters and contends with a mysterious and ever-present dark force.

As you jump between planets, you’ll get to explore labyrinthian levels with multiple possible routes to take. You’ll encounter various creatures and beasts that you’ll need to defeat using your blaster, which is upgradable with special abilities. There are hidden areas you can discover throughout the game for more loot. There are also around 50 characters that you'll meet. You’ll receive friendship cards when you help them.

One important thing to point out before playing this game is that this is just a demo. Aptly named Chapter Zero, think of it as a glimpse of how it will look and feel like when you finally get to play the complete version of it. It also has no direct connection with the main game, so you don't have to worry about spoiling anything as far as the story goes.

Who's a good boy?

Goodboy Galaxy has received a lot of fanfare, and rightfully so. The game is designed in a beautiful and nostalgic retro styling. The controls are solid, the gameplay is classic platforming action, and it seems to have a potentially interesting narrative to go along with everything. This is a game that's definitely worth keeping tabs on, even supporting its Kickstarter campaign, if you're so inclined.
