A VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a protocol for transferring information between two devices, over a public network. The VPN encrypts and/or modifies the information being transferred. This allows the user to hide their true IP address and location. It also prevents the user from being identified by their Internet Service Provider (ISP), bank, company, or anybody else. This is useful in cases where an Internet connection is not available or is slow, and for users who are behind a firewall or other restrictions. It is also useful to hide the IP address from web sites that block access to certain Internet domains or websites.

A VPN can also be used to watch online videos and stream live television without being restricted by geographical or parental restrictions.

VPNs are also used by businesses, schools, and other organizations for accessing a private network.
