Forewarned is an indie game developed by Dreambyte Game. This game will take you and three other players on an adventure inside the ancient Egyptian ruins. Your goal is to investigate phenomena, collect treasures, and discover lore. However, you will also need to survive the danger and banish the evil within.

Forewarned shares a lot of similarities with Phasmophobia but with a different setting. Additionally, it is far scarier, especially if the friends you're playing with are jerks. This game allows players to come back as mummies once they die mid-game. With this, you can choose to attack your friends. 

What is Forewarned?

Forewarned is a four-player co-op survival horror game. Here, you play as a team of archaeologists with a mission to raid ancient Egyptian tombs. Your goal is to figure out which Mejai is in the tomb to get into the inner tomb and acquire the ancient artifact inside. However, once you take the artifact, the Mejai will materialize, and you will be stuck inside the tomb.

Each round will have one relic to collect and numerous archaeological tasks to complete. There are also loots you can gather. However, you will also need to find the switch to open the doors and, of course, avoid the Mejai. It is up to your team to decide how you will accomplish these tasks. Don't worry. You will have the equipment you can use to increase your chance of survival.

You can play Forewarned solo or team up with your friends. You can also join public matches online. The game has procedurally generated levels and randomized AI. With this, no two playthroughs will be the same. You can even play in the VR mode for increased immersion. However, while the atmosphere is sufficiently creepy, the Egyptian imagery is not historically accurate. Additionally, it has bugs that need polishing. 

Forewarned’s official venture into the game landscape

The eagerly anticipated 1.0 release of Forewarned marks a significant milestone in the game's development journey. After months in Early Access, this major content update introduces a plethora of new features, including the arrival of the seventh Mejai, Ptahmes the Resilient. Ptahmes brings a new level of challenge, boasting unique abilities and a chilling backstory. Players will delve into two new maps, each with its own enigmatic story to uncover, from the eerie Secret Temple of Ptah to the mysterious Royal Outskirts. 

Additionally, a new procedurally generated tomb variation, Outdoor Ruins, adds further depth to the exploration experience, accompanied by over 30 new rooms, trap variations, and atmospheric enhancements. The update also overhauls the Mejai banishment ritual, transforming it into a dynamic and multi-phase showdown with the ancient spirit. Each tomb variation presents its own set of challenges, requiring players to adapt their strategies accordingly. Alongside these changes, eight new ushabti puzzles are introduced, promising fresh horrors and puzzles for players to conquer. 

The addition of the Hierodex tool offers invaluable assistance in deciphering hieroglyphics, further enhancing the puzzle-solving aspect of the game. Moreover, numerous quality-of-life improvements, AI enhancements, and gameplay tweaks contribute to a more polished and immersive experience for players. While this marks the culmination of the game's base foundation, the developers reassure players that more content updates are in the pipeline. 

Should you play it?

All in all, Forewarned is a highly recommended title to pick up, especially if you are into horror games or co-op games. It has exciting gameplay made more challenging by the procedurally generated levels and randomized AI. Even better, you and your friends can re-spawn as mummies once dead and become a villain that attacks the remaining survivor. Doing so will make the already difficult missions harder to complete.
