Build your own agricultural empire
Farming Simulator 16 is a free-to-play simulation game that puts you in charge of your own farm. From planting crops to managing finances, it delivers a surprisingly engaging experience that feels both relaxing and rewarding. Whether you're expanding your land or upgrading your equipment, there’s always something to work toward.
Building on Farming Simulator 15, this version improves the overall experience with smoother gameplay and more ways to manage your farm. Farming Simulator 16 strikes a balance between realism and accessibility, making it easy to get into while still offering plenty of depth for those who want to dive deeper.
Farming Simulator 16 offers a surprisingly deep and engaging experience, even for those unfamiliar with previous entries in the series. Without direct knowledge of how it has evolved from its predecessor or how it compares to the PC version, what stands out is the sheer quality and depth of this installment.
Describing the game almost makes it sound mundane—you operate slow-moving farm machinery to plow, sow, and harvest fields. After that, you drive, slowly, across the open world to sell it. Then, it’s time to check market prices to select a profitable crop so you can repeat the whole process. And all of this is in order to afford better equipment and more fields to further increase your income.
But while this all sounds like hard work, it’s actually a lot of fun. This is in part due to the game’s controls. You drive your tractor with either a slider or the gyroscope, both of which responded perfectly to my inputs – though, admittedly, a large part of this is due to the game’s deliberate pace.
Despite the wealth of options and information, the game takes a minimalistic approach to tutorials. Instead of overwhelming you with lengthy instructions, it allows you to dive straight into the experience. Occasional prompts provide guidance when needed, but for the most part, it's up to you to figure things out. For those who prefer additional direction, a comprehensive 23-page manual is readily accessible with just a few taps.
The manual isn’t the only easily accessible option; all the game's various controls are just a convenient tap away. These range from the simple pleasures (like honking your horn) right through to hiring farmhands, cycling through crops, and checking market prices.
Given the goal of Farming Simulator 16 is to maximize your profits, often this last option is the most important. More money allows you to expand your farm and purchase new tools from the 50 licensed machines on offer. From Bailers to Windrowers, each is recreated in brilliant detail. By increasing your production and efficiency, you can earn even more cash to speed up your agricultural empire's development – creating a satisfying feedback loop. While in-app purchases are available to accelerate progress, they never feel necessary.
For those looking to speed things up in a more engaging way, the multiplayer setup offers an additional layer of fun. By enabling Bluetooth or Wi-Fi, a second player can join the game locally to lend a hand with farm tasks. What makes the game particularly enjoyable is its balance between resource management and the hands-on, slow-paced farming experience. Stuffed with options and features, it is surprisingly easy to pick up and even easier to get invested in.
Building on its predecessor, Farming Simulator 16 makes running your farm more manageable with AI helpers, so you don’t have to handle everything yourself. The expanded machinery lineup, featuring over 20 real-life brands like New Holland, Case IH, and Ponsse, gives you more tools to work with. With better equipment and automation, you can focus on growing your farm without getting bogged down in the details.
Forestry is another welcome addition, offering a new way to earn income. With this new activity, you can now harvest wood using specialized machinery and sell the timber for extra profit. It’s a nice change of pace from traditional farming, adding more variety to your daily tasks. Whether you're managing fields or forests, these improvements make for a more well-rounded experience.
Farming Simulator 16 may not appeal to action fans, but its deep management and simulation mechanics offer a surprisingly engaging experience. While the slow pace and lack of physics-based collisions might not suit everyone, the game’s structured and immersive gameplay has its own appeal. It’s not the most dynamic title, but for those who enjoy a more methodical approach, it’s certainly worth considering.
