Diplomacy is Not an Option
Large-scale medieval strategy game for PC
Whimsical city builder game
Developed by Grenaa Games, Fabledom is a quirky yet intriguing addition to the city-building game genre. Unlike similar titles that focus on more modern civilizations, this simulator takes you to a rustic, medieval town straight out of a fairytale. Instead of playing a mayor, you will become either a prince or a princess in this one.
For some time, Fabledom was playable in Early Access mode. In the beginning, you get to choose whether you want to play as a Prince or a Princess, as well as pick a preference for romantic prospects. The latter is necessary as pursuing someone is staked to play a large role in the development of your settlement.
You have to pick an ideal spot for your settlement and grow it accordingly. Resources like food and wood must be managed well, or else the consequences will be dire. You can also delegate tasks to the citizenry. However, many players reported bugs, which are expected to be fixed in later updates.
In celebration of Fabledom’s official version 1.0 release, the game is available at a discount for a limited period. Besides that, the game has received cool new features, such as additional Steam achievements; difficulty options Calm, Classic, Challenge, and Cruel; as well as rulers Farrah, the Tinker Princess and Sir Payne, the Dark Knight, along with their special buildings. Farrah comes with the Regenerator and Tinkers Guild, while Sir Payne brings with him the Prison Cell and Strategic Council.
Aside from that, there are events like new missions and encounters, troll invasions, dragons, and sisters of the wicked witches. There are new forms of fortifications, as well, such as wooden walls and gates. At the same time, players can now build resource extraction buildings like the Mystic Mine and Prismatic Liquid Extractor, cultural and entertainment establishments like the Ferris Wheel, Mall, Circus Tent, and Café, and decorative options like the Bell Tower, Garden of Love, Musical Garden, Flower Queen, and Arc of Pigs.
In terms of defense boost, players now have access to new tower embellishments such as the Cannon, Mortar, and Ballista. Meanwhile, military units can now be revived at the Hero Quarter. As for quality-of-life improvements, there are new animations and ambiance sounds, bug fixes, adjusted and balanced in-game costs, reworked map UI, and localization enhancements.
Fabledom spins the typical city-building game into something whimsical and fantastical. While it employs the usual gameplay mechanics of the sub-genre, such as growing a town and managing its resources or delegating tasks to citizens, it also has fresh factors, like the romance aspect.
