Get your blob to the top
Extreme Blob Escape is a free indie platformer from AsterPeth. In this simple yet weird adventure, you control the titular blob, complete with the frustratingly difficult jelly physics, as you try to navigate through the levels. This game has simple graphics and unbelievably challenging gameplay, which work together to keep you glued to your seat playing this one for hours.
Gameplay-wise, Extreme Blob Escape feels like a visually simpler version of other challenging physics games like Getting Over It with Bennett Foddy or Balancelot. It also has no story and no conflict. Here, it is just you against the environment.
Choose your blob and navigate
One weird feature that Extreme Blob Escape has is the character selector, which lets you choose between different designs aside from the default purple blob. It includes a sunny-side-up egg or a human face, presumably of the developer himself, which reacts depending on the movement of the blob. It adds fun to the game, even if only for aesthetic purposes.
As a casual game, it has a small file size of less than 40 MB. It also comes with a minimalist design. The environments are solid-colored platforms that vary in color every few levels, which comes off as boring and repetitive in the later stages if not for the fact that the obstacles are getting too difficult by then. As you get used to the controls, the levels make it more difficult to pass through.
In terms of controls, you use the mouse to control the direction and strength of the blob jump. Make a mistake, and the blob will slide, roll, and fall. As you progress through the game, it requires more accurate “shots” to make sure you land exactly where you want to. Lastly, if all these aren’t enough, the game has a timer that adds pressure to the gameplay.
Minimalist and frustrating
One way to describe Extreme Blob Escape is frustrating but in a good way. So many shots look perfect, only for you to watch the jelly physics send your blob back to where you started, or worse. Its minimalist design lets you focus on the game and nothing else. From the controls to the timer, a lot of factors contribute to making this a challenging and ultimately addicting video game.
Pros
- Has a "character selector" feature
