A creepy, endless descent into the unknown

EXPEDITION TO THE BACKROOMS is a first-person adventure horror game that takes the terrifying internet myth of the "Backrooms" and transforms it into a procedurally generated survival experience. Developed by 1_Cutter_1, players are part of a scientific team sent to investigate the mysterious liminal space, armed with only basic equipment and your wits.

EXPEDITION TO THE BACKROOMS emphasizes atmospheric tension, eerie silence, and the growing dread of being hopelessly lost. With frequent updates and increasing mod support, it has gained attention as one of the more immersive Backrooms-inspired games. It also has a free demo

Tension-filled exploration

The EXPEDITION TO THE BACKROOMS’ gameplay is focused on survival and exploration. Each run drops you into an endless labyrinth of sterile yellow hallways or bizarre industrial zones. Levels are procedurally generated, meaning you never explore the same layout twice. The deeper you go, the stranger and more hostile the environments become. You must manage stamina, avoid hostile entities, and find exits to proceed to the next level.

The experience is mostly non-combative and rewards patience and attentiveness. Hidden lore logs scattered through the levels deepen the mystery and hint at a larger narrative. Sound plays a critical role in building suspense. Distant humming, footstep echoes, and sudden noises —some of which may or may not signal danger — all contribute to an immersive horror experience, amplifying the suspense. However, the lack of direct objectives can be confusing for new players.

Can you get out?

Unlike jumpscare-heavy horror games, Expedition to the Backrooms builds psychological terror over time. The audio design is sparse, amplifying ambient noise and the uncanny silence. The environments feel disturbingly familiar but always just wrong enough to keep players on edge. With flashlight batteries to conserve and strange creatures to avoid, there is constant pressure to move forward while still being methodical in your approach.

Visually, the game leans into the eerie aesthetic of "liminal spaces." The yellow-tinted halls of Level 0, the claustrophobic pipes of Level 2, and the flickering lights of deeper areas. Simplicity works in its favor, allowing tension to build naturally. There is a deliberately dreamlike quality to how the world feels endless and disjointed.  The recent update added new levels, enhanced AI pathfinding for entities, and expanded the equipment system with tools.

A surreal descent into fear

EXPEDITION TO THE BACKROOMS captures the core of psychological horror with its procedurally generated levels, minimalist visuals, and ever-present sense of dread. It offers a uniquely immersive take on the Backrooms mythos, rewarding exploration and careful listening over combat. While new players may struggle with vague objectives, its atmosphere and constant tension make it a standout for fans of slow-burn, immersive horror.
