ELEVATOR is a free adventure game from Updown Games. In this thriller experience, you get to explore an abandoned office building with a titular elevator at the center of it all. A creepy building, inaccessible hallways, and locked doors will make your life miserable as you approach a shocking conclusion regarding the company.
The developers behind ELEVATOR shares that it was inspired by games like The Stanley Parable and Portal 2. These inspirations actually reflect in the game, creating an unsettling environment without too many characters and minimal jump scares, and a story that will leave a mark on players.
In ELEVATOR, you find yourself trapped at andromedava’s building, which spans multiple floors. No one else is in the building yet there’s someone watching your every move. This huge empty building makes the game feel unnerving as if something’s going to jump you at any moment. Though breathtaking most of the time, it’s actually enjoyable once you’re out of it.
Made using the Unreal Engine, you can expect some good quality graphics from the game. Its effective use of lighting plus the attention to detail makes it look photorealistic in some instances. This graphics quality, paired with the first-person perspective, makes for an immersive game experience. Also, there are a lot of different puzzles for you to solve — from visual to logical challenges — keeping you seated for hours.
Story-wise, the game tasks you with going to the top floor of the building. However, once you get there, the game ends rather abruptly and leaves a lot of the plot questions unanswered. This approach has been used in other media, such as the Cube film franchise. An open ending like this one leaves a strong impression and adds to the creepy feel.
With its masterful use of various game elements–from visuals to gameplay mechanics — ELEVATOR makes itself a must-try in the thriller genre. Even without ghosts or monsters, developers of the game managed to create something that will keep you uneasy all throughout. It even takes the effort to create impressively realistic environments by maximizing the Unreal Engine. Although the ending is quite vague, it remains highly recommended.
