The classic dragon-slaying family, on modern devices
EGGCONSOLE Dragon Slayer IV DRASLEFAMILY MSX2 is an action game from D4 Enterprise. This brings the retro Legacy of the Wizard, also known as Dragon Slayer IV: Drasle Family, to modern platforms. Follow the Drasle family as they challenge an ancient dragon. With each family member suitable for a specific task, it’s up to the player to switch between them and overcome the various obstacles.
It’s worth noting that EGGCONSOLE Dragon Slayer IV DRASLEFAMILY MSX2 adapts the Japanese version. Other classics include Dragon Quest (1986), The Final Fantasy Legend, and the games in the NAMCO MUSEUM ARCHIVES Vol 2.
Find the fabled Dragon Slayer
EGGCONSOLE Dragon Slayer IV DRASLEFAMILY MSX2 is a faithful port of the original 8-bit game released in 1987. As mentioned, you solve puzzles and get across platforms by using the abilities of the Drasle family members. Xemn the family head is a warrior and can push heavy blocks around, while Lyll is the daughter who can jump the highest and destroy special blocks.
While it plays like the classic platformers of the time, such as Mappy or Lode Runner, some parts of it also feel like a JRPG experience. You regularly see the family in their home, which also doubles as the character selection screen, and you need four crowns before finding the Dragon Slayer sword. After this, the characters can finally face the ancient dragon.
One minor setback in this game is that the main game and gallery screen are in Japanese, although the menu and “How To Play” parts were translated into English. Another challenge in this game is its difficulty, most of which stems from the lack of explainers or tutorials. Without outside guidance, expect to take some time learning the characters, the mechanics, and the levels.
Reviving an underrated NES gem
EGGCONSOLE Dragon Slayer IV DRASLEFAMILY MSX2 faithfully revives the 1987 classic, blending platformer mechanics with JRPG elements. While language barriers and a steep learning curve pose challenges, the game's charm lies in its nostalgic gameplay and unique character abilities. Players embark on a quest with the Drasle family, solving puzzles and confronting the dragon. It's a journey reminiscent of gaming's golden age, offering both enjoyment and a test of skill.
