The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) was established in March 2015, to investigate and handle all complaints and grievances related to alleged corruption, criminal activity, or other issues of public interest.

This department was created by Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, with the creation of an independent, autonomous, and neutral body to ensure that the rights of individuals are protected. It also has the power to conduct its own investigations and to issue final reports with recommendations for change, regardless of the outcome of a complaint.

The DSI has a wide range of powers and responsibilities, including the following:

• To ensure the safety of the nation's nuclear facilities.
• To prevent and combat the spread of radioactive materials.
• To secure first-aid supplies for hospitals and other requirements.
• To protect the rights of individuals.
• To prevent and combat terrorism.
