Doki Doki Literature Club is a high school love story in which the main character is recruited to the school's writing club, where he is forced to write poems for the love of his life. The story unfolds as he starts to fall for his classmate, and is ultimately revealed when he has a chance encounter with his love at a cafe, which leads to a passionate kiss.

In the original version of the game, the player makes choices and determines the fate of the main character, and how the story ends. In the version released for mobile, the story is told through text and the choices are no longer significant, as the player is given the freedom to make choices in order to explore the storyline and to discover the ending.

Doki Doki Literature Club Plus! brings the original story to life in a brand-new way, and allows players to explore new sides of the story. In the game, the player is given the freedom to make choices and to discover the storyline, and to explore different sides of the story, they are presented with new options and new challenges.
