The game is played on a board that is divided into 64 squares, and the players begin the game by placing their pawns on the board. Each player can move one square at a time, and when a player moves a pawn, that pawn can move to the position that is one square forward or backward.

The object of the game is to eliminate all of the opponent's pawns by using the available space on the board. If a player can not move, the opponent can move the player's pawn to the square that is next to the player's own square.
