Captain Games puts a new spin on survival games with Castaway on a Weird Island. In this flat, pixelated world, you’re a survivor of a shipwreck and you’re looking for a way back home. Using the clues presented outside of the squares, you need to guess which direction you need to go to. Guess correctly and you could receive food, treasure, or (at best) a boat ride back home. If you guess wrong, you won’t be survive much longer. 

What is the Castaway game?

Castaway on a Weird Island is a roguelike game inspired by 868-HACK. You play in an 8x8 square, with each block colored blue or white. All the squares colored in white indicate a path. At the same time, it’s also hiding either something good or something bad. Good items are your food, jewels, and (of course) a ship. Bad items can be a ghost, a wild animal, or an islander protecting its home. 

You’re tasked to deduce what’s behind the white square based on the clues presented to you. All the clues are displayed outside the gaming area. On your left-hand side are the objects adjacent to you. You should see your character’s icon on this area as well, letting you know which item is nearest to him. At times, items are completely hidden. 

You can reveal hidden objects by cashing in one of the jewels you pick up.  On your right-hand side is a chart that tells you how many blue tiles are near each item in ascending order. This means it counts from 0 to 3 blue tiles. By considering the items adjacent to you and how many tiles is near each item, you can figure out which direction is safest to go to. 

Highly replayable logic puzzle game

Castaway on a Weird Island is not as strange as it says it is. The game’s simplicity makes it all the more fun and addicting. There’s no definite end to this puzzle game. As long as you keep solving the location of the ship, you can proceed to the next round. The program may not be as immersive or graphically advanced as popular survival games, but it’s definitely a fun way to exercise your investigative and critical thinking skills.
