Free content for Warband
Brytenwalda Mod is a free-to-use game utility developed by the Brytenwalda-Dev Team. This mod adds a host of new content to the action role-playing game Mount & Blade: Warband. From a more customizable character creation section, a host of new missions to accomplish, to partly remastering the game with all-new textures, this mod is a good reason to revisit the classic game.
The Brytenwalda Mod is still a good addition to your Warband game despite facing a number of issues common among mods. Similarly, you might want to consider the Snow in the East or the Rising Sun: Bakumatsu mods.
Viking-themed mod
At its core, Brytenwalda Mod is a Viking-themed add-on for Warband. In fact, the name Brytenwalda is an Old English title granted to people who gained lordship over other kingdoms—serving as the theme and challenge for its content. Facing new and custom factions, you’ll be tasked with achieving supremacy in this foreign land. You start with an overhauled character creation section, allowing you to further customize your Warband avatar.
As mentioned, it offers all-new quests that are thematically consistent. To further put you in the immersive period, it applies custom textures starting from faction banners and identifiers to the use of symbols and icons authentic to the time period. In fact, this allows you to appreciate the different cultures of the time through stores scattered throughout the map—each offering distinctly different wares.
It also raises the stakes by increasing the renown together with the difficulty of events such as tournaments. However, as a mod, it still suffers from a couple of issues common with indie-developed mods. For one, it has a lot of glitches that affect the gameplay experience. Troops appear and disappear all the time, with a player reporting that these troops teleport elsewhere on the map.
A great add-on with minor glitches
Brytenwalda Mod remains a good addition to any Warband game library, particularly for history fans, despite its own set of technical difficulties. It captures a period in world history in its own way. Activating a mod lets players experience era-specific quests, as well as minor nods to the Dark Ages—from faction banners down to the trinkets sold in markets. Highly recommended.
