UPI is a virtual payment address (VPA) application that enables users to transfer money instantly between bank accounts through a Virtual Payment Address (VPA). This can be done by using a UPI ID that is unique to the user.

The application was developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) in collaboration with the RBI, and it is the first of its kind UPI application in India.
