Better Settlers is a free Fallout 4 mod that adds countless new, unique settlers that can move into your settlements. It is only one of many settlement-focused mods for the game similar to Homemaker and Settlements Expanded. But unlike the others, this mod is not centered around building at all; as the name would suggest, rather it focuses on the settlers themselves. Other mods worth looking at include AnimeRace Nanakochan and We Are The Minutemen.

Better Settlers adds more depth to the basic settlers in vanilla Fallout 4. It adds hundreds of unique settlers and gives them functions, uses, and individual traits. It also allows you to provide completely lore-friendly customizations to almost all characteristics.

Customization

The mod itself adds countless additions to the base settlers of the game, and allows for total customization of their traits, equipment, and appearance. By default, settlers will now be much more useful in combat and can actually help in raids and attacks. With different ‘tiers’ of settler strength, ranging from tier one to tier five, with five being the strongest, these settlers are complete with full combat armor and weapons. 

The mod also allows these settlers to spawn with clothes and physical traits from other mods, such as hairstyle and outfit mods, meaning you can have even more variety among your settlers with these additions.

Compatibility

Better Settlers is known to work perfectly with all other major extensions to the game. It has support for various equipment and clothing mods that the settlers can spawn with or receive via player customization. There are optional files in order to give more direct compatibility with these mods, but other mods most likely won't run into any issues, including those that make changes to settlements.

Interesting Characters

Better Settlers is an excellent lore-friendly addition to your modded Fallout 4 experience. If you’d like to turn your settlement’s population from a useless, boring crowd of the same few faces into a useful, varied, interesting bunch, Better Settlers is the answer.

The mod unfortunately no longer receives frequent updates, the last one being in 2017. However, no known bugs remain, and the mod works perfectly with all DLC and additional areas in the game that have been released since the game’s initial launch.
