A survival-horror game about uncovering a sinister experiment
Backroom Company is a premium simulation game that combines survival-horror tension with first-person exploration. You play as a test subject navigating eerie, maze-like spaces called the Backrooms, collecting strange data, avoiding threats, and uncovering a mystery that grows deeper with every step.
The game offers both structured story progression and open exploration, allowing you to choose how you experience its world. While similar to Lethal Company in survival setup, Backroom Company focuses more on narrative depth, subtle world-building, and uncovering a hidden conspiracy behind a shadowy organization and the endless halls you’re sent to explore.
Welcome to the company you never applied for
In Backroom Company, you play as a test subject deployed by a group called Backroom Company, also known as Async Corporation. Your job is to explore an endless maze called the Backrooms—an eerie space accessed through a strange phenomenon known as “Noclip.” Most who entered before you never came back. Now, you’re tasked with collecting strange artifacts and recording unexplained events that may unlock the truth behind their disappearance.
The narrative starts to take shape as you go deeper. You’ll receive messages from a mid-level manager named Blagos, who seems supportive at first. But as patterns emerge and your recordings pile up, you begin to notice the irregularities. Each level slowly adds context, building a conspiracy that feels planned rather than accidental. It's a gradual reveal that ties closely to what you see, hear, and gather throughout the missions.
You can switch between two distinct modes: Exploration and Story. Exploration Mode offers randomized levels where survival depends on stealth, timing, and smart decisions. Story Mode, meanwhile, guides you through set maps that gradually reveal the deeper mystery. Each location adds new threats, from sound-sensitive entities to extremely fast pursuers. While the game is atmospheric and engaging, some users have reported minor bugs and occasional control responsiveness issues.
Subtle but gripping
Overall, Backroom Company offers a focused, narrative-driven take on the survival-horror genre. It combines first-person exploration with mystery and thriller elements, resulting in a grounded yet tense experience. The dual gameplay modes and layered progression give you options depending on how you want to play. Although not without a few technical rough edges, it’s a well-thought-out game with plenty to uncover if you take your time.
