An indie adventure with a unique story
Backfirewall_ is a first-person adventure game by developer Naraven Games. In this indie video game, the player takes the role of an update assistant inside a smartphone. The phone’s operating system, OS9, is about to be updated but it refuses to be deleted and your mission is to help them.
This tragicomic first-person game gets players busy solving puzzles, fixing bugs, deleting data using cheat codes, and interacting with its interesting characters — all of which are software installed in the smartphone. All of this is presented in quirky, yet vibrant and colorful graphics.
Well-crafted puzzles and an engaging plot
Backfirewall’_s puzzles feature a great mix of wackiness and cleverness to keep things fun yet challenging. As an update assistant, you will be solving these puzzles in the phone’s RAM, the exclusive nightclub in the speakers, and through the Wi-Fi bureaucracy, among other areas. There are some instances when the game doesn’t make it clear what the task is, but it does provide clues to guide players.
The game’s smartphone world feels believable thanks to its interesting side characters that each have a distinct, fleshed-out story. You can learn more about their backstories by chatting and gossiping with them along your journey. The game makes sure these interactions aren’t boring through commendable voice acting and meta satirical humor reminiscent of the critically acclaimed video game, The Stanley Parable.
The plot of saving OS9 from deletion is engaging, and it only becomes better when coupled with the video game’s tragicomic theme. The satirical humor and breaking the fourth wall also further enhance every bit of the adventure for players. In addition, there are collectibles scattered throughout the game that will reveal a side story regarding the phone’s mysterious owner.
An adventure worth taking
Backfirewall_ offers a fresh experience for fans of adventure games. The core gameplay, which is fronted by well-designed puzzles, is solid. On the other hand, the environment, which is filled with believable characters, feels truly immersive. Aside from a few frustrating moments when the task at hand isn’t made clear, the game does an excellent job of guiding the players in their journey.
