Ashura: Dark Reign is a demo arcade game that offers a darker take on the Sonic the Hedgehog universe. In this side-scrolling fanmade, you start with the anthropomorphic blue hedgehog, tasked with saving the world from the nefarious Dr. Robotnik. However, this game also features the titular Ashura, an ancient antihero accidentally released in the present time.

Despite being a fanmade project, Ashura: Dark Reign offers a lot of exciting content like different playable characters plus a wide range of supporting cast. Be warned, though, since it contains darker themes, unlike other Sonic games like Sonic Mania and Sonic Superstars.

Usher in the Dark Reign

Ashura: Dark Reign starts like any other game in the franchise. You play as Sonic, run through levels and collect rings. However, in this iteration, Dr. Robotnik’s meddling with the Chaos Emeralds has reawakened an ancient being. While Ashura isn’t a canon character in the franchise, it has been a part of the fans’ lore ever since he appeared as the black-and-green glitch character in Sonic the Hedgehog 2.

As a fanmade project, it is impressive enough that it features full 3D characters and 2.5D set designs. The initial playthrough is playable with Sonic, then with Shadow. You can then unlock Ashura himself, whose single-player campaigns include a different take on the game’s story. Additional characters include Miles “Tails” Prower and Knuckles the Echidna. It also includes a selection of vehicles to spice up the side-scrolling experience.

The main setback in this game is that, unlike the main games with their generally wholesome premise and gameplay, this one contains dark and mature elements, including violence and gore. Also, unlike most Sonic games that are straightforward, this standalone mod features more puzzles and hidden object mechanics. This imposes a steeper learning curve, even for experienced players of the franchise.

A darker Sonic story

Overall, Ashura: Dark Reign offers an interesting take on the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Beyond the timeless good against evil storyline, this finally gives a long-known non-canon character a backstory — and puts a spin on the otherwise linear storyline. Play as Ashura, or check out how Tails and Knuckles could help the blue hedgehog thwart Dr. Robotnik once more. This game is a must-try. However, it’s not suitable for younger audiences.
