Angry Birds Rio is a free-to-play arcade game developed by Rovio. It takes the addictive slingshot gameplay of the original Angry Birds and transports it to the vibrant and colorful world of Rio de Janeiro. It features new levels, new enemies, and especially, new birds with different abilities.

Angry Birds Rio is inspired by Rio, the popular 2011 animated film. This installment sees the iconic birds kidnapped and taken to Rio, where they must escape their captors and ultimately foil the smugglers' plans. This refreshing change of scenery, coupled with new gameplay mechanics, with the same controls, and fun storyline.

A crossover we didn’t know we needed

Angry Birds Rio’s core gameplay remains familiar: use a slingshot to launch a variety of birds with unique abilities at structures, aiming to defeat the mischievous monkeys and pigs and cause as much destruction as possible. However, the Rio setting introduces new elements and challenges. Instead of the classic pigs, you'll be targeting marmosets and caged exotic birds, adding a fresh twist to the familiar formula, while keeping the same fun as the first game.

Instead of the classic pigs, you'll be targeting mischievous marmosets who guard caged exotic birds inside a seedy warehouse. Upon a successful target landing on a cage, instead of the pigs dying, the cages are set free, leaving the birds flying to escape back into the wild again. In many ways, it reflects the plot of the movie, but only Blu and Jewel from the film showed up in a cameo.

The levels showcase iconic locations from the film, such as the bustling cityscapes of Rio, the lush Amazon rainforest, and the lively beaches. It introduces new bird types such as Blu, who can perform a powerful dive bomb, and Jewel, who ricochets off multiple surfaces, creating chain reactions of destruction. Boss Fights is where you face off against larger-than-life adversaries, such as Nigel, the villainous cockatoo from the film. 

Familiarity and repetitiveness

The game doesn’t aim to overhaul the gameplay elements that made the original a smashing hit. The physics are still the same; the aesthetics change a bit but are familiar enough for returnees to enjoy. Aside from that, the pigs from the first game took a backseat here in favor of the marmosets, which, admittedly, are a weaker group of villains than the green hogs we love to hate.

On some levels, you'll need to collect a certain number of fruits scattered throughout the stage to achieve a higher score. The game can run on a wide range of systems with its flexible and forgiving requirements. Overall, it's a satisfying experience—great for casual puzzle fans, but those seeking variety might find it repetitive. Nonetheless, it stands out as one of the best in the franchise.
