Dark fantasy RPG game
American McGee's Alice is the demo of an adventure video game released in 2000. It is based on Lewis Carroll’s classic stories of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass, but it gives them a darker twist. This fantasy game follows Alice as she confronts her demons and struggles to restore order to her own twisted version of Wonderland.
The game has an intuitive interface and controls, making it easy for players of all levels to pick up. American McGee's Alice also features an impressive soundtrack that adds to the game’s atmosphere, like a precursor to Lies of P.
Dark adventure with psychological horror
In American McGee's Alice, you play as Alice Lidell who was brought to an Asylum after serious damages from a house fire. She meets a lot of characters from Carroll’s stories, such as Cheshire Cat, the White Rabbit, and the Queen of Hearts. In this retelling, however, expect a darker and grittier feel, from character and set design to the story's progression, but with a surprisingly happy ending.
As a third-person action-adventure game, the good use of its female protagonist has made this a cult classic. Alice can wield a variety of weapons known as “toys,” ranging from the melee Vorpal Blade to the magical Jabberwock’s Eye Staff. Players will also explore intricate 3D environments, solve mind-bending puzzles, and battle various unique enemies mostly inspired by the Wonderland stories.
Lastly, it’s worth noting that the games enjoy top-tier voice acting from renowned actors such as Christopher Lloyd and Tim Curry. Still, there are still a couple of problems with the game. For one, users have reported optimization issues such as extended load times. Additionally, while its story is impressive and compelling, the game ultimately lacks replayability value. There’s nothing else to do once you complete the storyline.
A timeless story adaptation
American McGee's Alice is an engaging and unique adventure game with a captivating story and setting. Its twisted Wonderland will keep players engaged throughout the journey, despite some minor drawbacks. With its unique atmosphere, intriguing puzzles, and impressive soundtrack, American McGee's Alice is definitely worth playing for fans of the classic stories or anyone looking for an exciting new experience.
