Age of Mythology: Extended Edition is a premium multiplayer and legendary real-time strategy game that blends historical civilizations with divine powers and mythical creatures. This RTS game expanded upon the classic Age of Empires formula by introducing gods, myth units, and unique god powers, offering players a fresh and captivating experience.

With its deep strategic gameplay, Age of Mythology: Extended Edition remains a beloved classic in the RTS genre. Its blend of history and fantasy allows players to command legendary civilizations like the Greeks, Egyptians, and Norse while summoning mythical beings to aid them in battle. The game’s enduring appeal is a testament to its brilliant design and timeless charm.

A strategy game of mythic proportions

Age of Mythology: Extended Edition features three unique civilizations, each with their own distinct playstyles and mythological pantheon. The Greeks rely on powerful heroes like Achilles, while the Egyptians call upon deities such as Ra for blessings. Meanwhile, the Norse thrive on aggressive play, earning favor through battle rather than religious structures, creating a varied and immersive experience for players throughout the game.

One of the game’s standout features is the god selection system. At key points, players can choose major and minor gods in the game, granting unique abilities and myth units. Whether it’s summoning a devastating meteor strike or calling forth the mighty Minotaur, these god powers add an exciting layer of strategy. This system ensures that no two matches feel the same.

It also shines with its engaging single-player campaign, "Fall of the Trident." The story-driven experience follows Arkantos, an Atlantean hero, as he embarks on an epic journey filled with betrayal, divine intervention, and legendary battles. The campaign’s varied missions and narrative depth keep players invested as well. However, with only three main civilizations, some players might find the variety lacking compared to other RTS games like Age of Empires II.

Expanded content and enhanced features

The Extended Edition includes the original Age of Mythology, the Age of Mythology: The Titans expansion, and the Golden Gift Campaign. It also improves the visual presentation with time-of-day effects, enhanced water, detailed shadows, bump and specular maps, global lighting, antialiasing, and ambient occlusion. These graphical enhancements give the classic real-time strategy game a more polished appearance while retaining its original mythology-inspired atmosphere.

This game also features full Steamworks integration, adding a Workshop mod manager, multiplayer support, achievements, Trading Cards, leagues, badges, events, and cloud saves. Extended features include Twitch integration, Treaty Mode, and an enhanced Observer mode, giving players more ways to customize and experience matches. These additions expand the game's community features and provide greater flexibility for multiplayer sessions, competitive play, and spectator experiences.

A mythical legacy

With its beautifully crafted world, innovative mechanics, and captivating mythological theme, Age of Mythology: Extended Edition remains a standout in the RTS genre. While it may lack the civilization variety of other strategy games, its unique god powers, engaging campaign, and deep strategic elements make it a must-play for fans of mythology and real-time strategy. Even decades after its release, its legacy continues to inspire and entertain.
