Complex grand strategy game for mobile
Age of History II - Lite is a free-to-play strategy game from Łukasz Jakowski. This is a wildly immersive turn-based experience that covers the entirety of human history. From the prehistoric ages to beyond the two world wars, putting you in control of one of the nations. You can unify the world under your rule or destroy everyone in your path.
While the graphics are far from Rome: Total War or Age of Empires Mobile, Age of History II - Lite has a scale rarely found in mobile devices. It’s closer to Civilization or Europa Universalis.
Establish dominance in the Feudal Age
While the base game covers the full game, Age of History II - Lite only lets you play through the Feudal Ages. Still, it covers a good deal that’s close to the actual history. In this singular age available, you get to choose from 42 starting civilizations. The gameplay is still largely the same, you have to make a lot of decisions, both internal and external.
Graphics-wise, it prefers a much simpler approach. You don’t see units or buildings, only a massive map that accurately represents the period. You can zoom in and out, and choose actions from a lot of tabs. Budget resources, gain tech points, and spread your domain on a color-coded world map. One point to appreciate, however, is how the medieval-age territories are divided into their respective provinces.
It goes without saying that a turn-based strategy of this scale is not for everyone. First, the learning curve is steep, especially for newcomers in the subgenre. As the lite version, it thrusts you into the middle of the timeline, with minimal supervision. There are a lot of resources and metrics to consider. Also, a big part of the content is hidden behind the paywall of the original game.
A teaser of the larger, grander game
Age of History II - Lite offers a condensed yet immersive experience, focusing on the Feudal Ages within a vast historical context. With 42 starting civilizations, it provides substantial gameplay depth despite its simplified graphics. However, its steep learning curve and limited content accessibility may deter some players. Nonetheless, for enthusiasts of turn-based strategy willing to delve into the intricacies of resource management and territorial expansion, this is a must-try.
