File explorer PSD preview
PSD Codec is a system shell extension that adds native support for Photoshop files within File Explorer. Developed by Ardfry Imaging, the software registers a codec that allows PSD files to display thumbnails and render visual content directly in folder views. It processes layered PSD data into a flattened preview image that File Explorer can display without invoking external software.
PSD Codec also integrates at the system level, operating automatically once installed, and applies its decoding logic whenever a PSD file is accessed through standard system browsing tools. The trial version includes the core decoding and preview functionality.
PSD Codec enables Photoshop thumbnails directly within File Explorer. It reads embedded image data from PSD files and renders a composite preview that represents the document’s visible layers. The codec operates when folders are opened or refreshed, allowing Explorer to request preview data during its normal file enumeration. Thumbnail size scales according to the view, from small icons to large tiles, without launching separate windows.
The software also enables preview pane rendering when the Explorer Preview Pane is active. Selecting a PSD file triggers the codec to supply a static image representation of the document contents for inline display. This preview reflects the saved state of the file rather than editable layer data. The codec functions strictly as a viewer component and does not expose layer controls, color adjustments, or metadata editing within Explorer.
It also installs as a system-level component that registers PSD file handling with native imaging services. Once registered, File Explorer treats PSD files similarly to other supported image formats for preview purposes. The software does not modify original PSD files during decoding. However, its scope is limited to read-only interpretation of image data, focusing on visual representation rather than structure analysis or asset extraction, and lacks export or conversion features.
PSD Codec includes Explorer thumbnail generation and preview pane rendering for PSD files through a dedicated system codec. Its focus is limited to visual decoding and display of saved document content. The software does not provide editing tools, layer inspection, or export options. As a trial version, usage limitations may apply outside core functionality. Its defining characteristic is system-level integration that enables PSD visibility within standard file browsing environments.
